“I paint women as they truly are: luminous in what is seen, formidable in what is carried.”
Women carry children, households, expectations and quiet forms of endurance. They absorb pressure, hold families together and remain standing. Yet what the outside world often sees is elegance, composure and grace. It is this tension between what is carried and what is visible that lies at the heart of my work.
Through contemporary figurative watercolour, I create symbolic female figures rather than portraits of specific individuals. Their gestures, posture and stillness carry emotional and psychological meaning, inviting the viewer to recognise something personal within them.
I work with restrained colour, delicate line and 23.75 carat gold leaf. The gold is not used as decoration, nor does it give the woman value. It reveals the worth already present within her and traces a path towards transformation, self-recognition and new possibilities.
My ongoing body of work, The Composed Woman, honours women who carry more than they reveal, yet continue to meet the world with dignity, strength and quiet beauty.
Biography
Denise Campfens is a Dutch contemporary artist and the founder of DRC Atelier. Her figurative, symbolic portraits explore the tension between what women carry within and what they reveal to the world.
Working primarily in watercolour and 23.75 carat gold leaf, Campfens creates luminous female figures that embody dignity, resilience and composure. Drawing on the language of symbolism, she uses the visible image to communicate deeper emotional and psychological meaning.
Her ongoing body of work, The Composed Woman, examines women as carriers of responsibility, expectation and silent endurance. Through restrained colour, delicate line and symbolic applications of gold, Campfens presents feminine strength not as loud or forceful, but as an enduring presence expressed through grace.
Her work will be presented internationally at the Monaco Art Fair in 2026.
